A former assistant coach at Heartland of Owerri, Chijioke Gabriel Osuagwu (aka Oburonu) has been named the new scouting manager/youth development director at the youth club that produced Villarreal of Spain winger, Samuel Chukwueze.
Osuagwu, who went on to serve as head coach with Abia Warriors of Umuahia and Bussdor of Port Harcourt will now be in full charge of all assessments, recruitments and grooming of hidden talents by Umuahia-based Diamond Football Academy, who also produced the like of Kelechi Nwakali as well as many other youngsters fast-rising through the ranks at home and abroad.
The vastly-exposed youth expert, who had previously worked in Lagos with Sunday Daniels FC, National Grassroots Dream Team and Flaming Flamingoes, has already hit the ground running by arranging top-grade build-up matches for the academy against Nigerian league clubsides.
He disclosed that they were able to get decent results against Enugu Rangers International of Enugu and Akwa United of Uyo, with prospects of even better outings in days to come, but admitted they need more international connections, links and corporate backing to make the best of their targets in discovering the best of Nigeria’s hidden talents.
The amiable tactician, who took over as The Naze Millionaires’ acting head coach in the wake of the exit of former Super Eagles’ striker and gaffer, Samson Yebowei Siasia some years back, said he has made huge plans in mind for Chukwueze’s amar mata, for which he admitted he needs support from far and wide to make his vision come true for the team.
Osuagwu disclosed: “Diamond Academy played a match against Enugu Rangers International FC, and it ended 1-1. It was only a first half game, because rain disrupted the match.
“The team that brought up Kelechi Nwakali, Samuel Chukwueze and a host of others also traded tackles with Akwa United and won by 1-0; all the goals scored by Francis Nwaeke. The Academy owned by Hon Martins Iky Apugo are putting their best to attract foreign deals.”
