Dinamo Batumi of Georgia defender, Godfrey Oboabona has stated delight with the golden opportunity he got to feature in the Europa League with the team he joined earlier this year, but admitted it was a tough game he and his teammates encountered on Thursday, megasportsarena.com reports.
Oboabona is picking positives from his historic night out in Europe and, although he could not save his side from crashing out after a 3-0 loss away to Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel, the centre back said he was happy to play all 90 minutes of the game in The Land of Milk & Honey.
He headed into the fixture believing that he and other players in George Geguchadze’s side stood a good chance of making progress, as he reckoned that they had improved vastly in recent time and they could be the surprise teams in this season’s edition of the second-tier continental clubs’ contest.
Oboabona, who has played for Rizespor of Turkey, Al-Ahli of United Arab Emirates and Gorica of Czech Republic since leaving Sunshine Stars of Akure in 2013, said he is happy and proud that he was able to finally make his debut in European club competition.
With his club having finished as runners-up in the Erovnuli Liga, Oboabona and his colleagues got the chance to play against Be’er Sheva in a one-legged first qualifying round fixture, which he went on to describe as a very huge step forward for him and his teammates; though they lost the game on Thursday.
He enthused that Batumi, who maintained an 11-game unbeaten run before Thursday’s game, will return home with several benefits from their European experience, which he believes will help them pull of greater results on the domestic front and in years to come.
Oboabona, who was part of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winning squad and Brazil 2014 World Cup team, added: “Playing in either the Champions League or Europa League is the dream of any player and it gives me a sense of fulfillment that my name (is) among other great footballers to have graced the tournament. That was also one of the reasons I joined Dinamo Batumi.”
