2022 World Cup: CAS takes decision on kicking Ecuador out of tournament

Date:

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has ruled that Ecuador will feature at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

CAS on Tuesday, said Byron Castillo, the player who Chile claimed was ineligible to feature in the qualifiers, was deemed an Ecuadorean national.

However, Ecuador will get a three-point deduction for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

They have also been fined 100,000 Swiss Francs ($101,605.36) for the “use of a document containing false information”.

The statement added that “since the nationality of a player with a national association is determined by national laws (subject to time limits in case of a change of sporting nationality, which was not the case here), Byron Castillo was eligible to play … in the preliminary round of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.”

CAS, which is sport’s highest court, further explained that the decision was based on the fact that the Ecuadorean authorities confirmed Castillo as an Ecuadorean national.

Ecuador will play in Group A alongside hosts Qatar, the Netherlands and Senegal.
