Former AS Monaco striker, Victor Ikpeba has backed Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen to win this year’s African Footballer of the Year award ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Bayern Munich’s Sadio Mane.
According to Ikepba, Osimhen’s rivals for the African Footballer of the Year award, Salah and Mane are struggling so far this season.
Speaking on Supersport’s magazine show, Monday Night Football, Ikpeba said, “Osimhen doesn’t need to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be crowned the African Footballer of The Year for 2023.
“If Napoli wins the Serie A and they get to the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League, like the semifinals or the final, he can be the African Footballer of The Year.”
He added, “Osimhen’s rivals for the award, the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, are really struggling at the moment.”
Osimhen has been in top form for Napoli so far this season, scoring 18 goals in 18 Serie A matches.
His form for Napoli has attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.
