2025 Grammy: Nigerian artists top the Best African Music Performance nominations

Date:

Nigerian music artists have once again made a powerful impact at the 67th Grammy Awards, dominating the nominations for the prestigious Best African Music Performance category.

The Recording Academy unveiled the nominations on Friday, and this year, Nigeria leads the charge, with a strong showing from both established stars and rising talents.

Among the returning nominees are Burna Boy and Asake. Burna Boy earned his nomination for his hit song “Higher,” while Asake received a nod for his collaboration with Wizkid, “MMS.”

It’s a remarkable feat for both artists, underscoring their continued global influence.

Davido also makes his mark, earning his second nomination in this category for his contribution to Chris Brown’s track “Sensational.” Joining him is Lojay, who secures his first Grammy nomination for the same song.

Rounding out the Nigerian nominees, Yemi Alade lands her first solo nod for her hit “Tomorrow,” while Tems’ “Love Me Jeje” also earns a nomination for Best African Music Performance.

Notably, Tems is the only African artist to receive three nominations across global categories this year, with her debut album “Born in the Wild” up for Best Global Music Album and her hit song “Burning” competing for Best R&B Song.

Young music sensation Rema also earns a nod, with his sophomore album “HEIS” nominated for Best Global Music Album.

The surge of Nigerian talent at the Grammys continues with Jordan Adetunji, whose viral track “Kelani” and contribution to the One Love soundtrack earn him a nomination for Best Reggae Album.

This year’s nominations mark a significant milestone for Burna Boy, whose six consecutive Grammy nominations make him the Nigerian artist with the most nominations to date.

Since his first nod for Best Global Music Album in 2020 and his win in 2021 for “Twice as Tall,” Burna Boy has been at the forefront of the growing global recognition of African music.

On the international stage, Beyoncé leads the pack with 11 nominations for her genre-crossing album Cowboy Carter, competing across categories like Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year.

She also features in pop, rap, country, and Americana categories.

Other major nominees include Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone, each with seven nominations, while Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and Sabrina Carpenter follow with six nominations each.

The 67th Grammy Awards ceremony will take place on February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, where the world will eagerly watch as these talented artists battle it out for one of music’s highest honors.
