2026 Commonwealth Games Trials In Lagos Enter Final Day

The 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games national trials for athletics has entered its final day at the Yabatech Sports Complex with major highlights being the 100m men’s final and the 400m men’s and women’s final.

The three day trial event adjuged to be very successful was organized by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) under the leadership of President Tonobok Okowa.

It witnessed setting of new records and personal best by athletes in various track and field events.

While US-based Blessing Ogundiran, emerged the new national champion of the 100m women with a time of 11.12secs, the men’s 100m final scheduled for this afternoon have top contenders including Favour Ashe, Chidera Ezeakor, Fakorede Adekalu, Tejiri Godwin and Enoch Adegoke.

More fire works is expected for the 400m men’s and women’s finals considering the outcome of the semi finals.

New 400m women sensation, IyanuOluwa Aderemi, who ran a new Personal Best of 51.86secs will be up against veteran Patience Okon-George, Taiwo Kudoro, Faith Ezechukwu, Jecinter Lawrence, and Becky Ebiyadi.

The men’s 400m final would be more explosive with Emmanuel Ojeli, Sikiru Adeyemi, Victor Sampson, Samson Nathaniel, Victory Achakpoekri, and Tyler Johnson all jostling for the crown and there is the possibility of more than one athlete doing 45 secs.

Other events lined up for today include the 110m men’s hurdles, 100m women’s hurdles, 800m finals and 200m finals men and women.

Meanwhile, Olympian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, yesterday threw 21.46 metres to win the shot put men while Oyesade Oyetayo won the Hammer throw with 65.07 metres.

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Chief Tonobok Okowa, is delighted at the large turnout of Nigerian athletes home and abroad for the national trials and assured that selection for the Commonwealth Games will be purely on merits and current performance.
