Manchester City and Liverpool’s Community Shield meeting next season will take place at Leicester’s King Power stadium, it has been confirmed.

Wembley, which usually puts up the traditional seasonal curtain, can’t do it this year as it hosts the final of the European Women’s Championship on Sunday 31 July.

sports post revealed earlier this month that the King Power were the frontrunners to replace Wembley after ahead of Elland Road, Villa Park, the Emirates Stadium and London Stadium.

And now Leicester’s 32,261 seats have been confirmed as the host of next season’s showpiece, which will take place on Saturday 30 July at 5pm.

Susan Whelan, Foxes CEO, said: ‘It is fantastic news for the city to host such a prestigious match at our stadium and further underlines Leicester City’s long-term commitment to establish Leicestershire as a home for high profile sporting events.

“On behalf of the football club, I would like to thank the FA and all stakeholders who have worked with us to make this possible.

“We look forward to welcoming teams and supporters from Manchester City and Liverpool to the city in July.”

The 2022 Community Shield, which will pit the winners of last season’s Premier League and FA Cup against each other, will be broadcast live on ITV to viewers in the UK.

Liverpool and Manchester City will therefore close the horns on the Foxes’ 32,261 seat location

It goes on a week earlier than usual due to this year’s winter World Cup in Qatar, and the new Premier League season kicks off on August 6.

In choosing an alternative to Wembley, the FA took into account the controversy surrounding Liverpool’s City and City’s meeting in the FA Cup semi-final, which was played at the national stadium on a weekend when there were no direct train links to London.
