About Us

SportsDay Newspapers is Nigeria’s most improved and fastest growing sports newspaper focuses primarily on Nigerian sports personalities particularly Nigerian footballers. With its distinctive features and international connection, through the London Daily Mirror daily pull-out, it has become a must ready for readers across Nigeria and the West Coast of Africa.

It started on the 8th of August 2008 (08-08-08), with the determination to redefine the Nigerian sports media market and set a standard that was at the time non-existent.

With sports playing a prominent unifying role in the Nigeria’s socio-political system, there was need for a fresh breath of ideas into the sports journalistic genre, which informed the birth of SportsDay.

A 16-page all-colour production, the newspaper also sets a pace by becoming Nigeria’s only nationally circulating daily in partnership with a British Newspaper; the London Daily Mirror. This was informed by the craze of the average Nigerian sports follower for the English Premiership and the fact that the world, as has generally been agreed has become a global village. On a daily basis, SportsDay runs a 6-page pull-out of the Daily Mirror, focusing on the latest happenings in sports in England and globally.

Apart from covering sports widely, the newspaper is the only one with a general news page to cover other interest outside sports, ranging from politics to business and general interest.

On human capital, the newspaper boasts of some of the brightest minds on its board with Chief Solomon Ogba, who was for eight years the Commissioner for Sports in Nigeria’s richest sports state; Delta, heading the board as Chairman/Publisher.

Others on the board include Chief Mike Itemuagbor, Nigeria Football Federation sole marketer, through Pamodzi Ltd, Mr. Joel Onuwakpor of Elomaz Hotels and Mr. Dere Otubu, who is the Chairman of one of Nigeria’s fastest growing Insurance firms, Staco Insurance Plc amongst several others.

Ben Alaiya, a versatile and well-read journalist who has worked with ThisDay, The Diet, Comet, National Mirror and Daily Independent newspapers, where he rose to the position of Assistant Managing Editor, heads the robust editorial and management team.

Also on the team is Mr Ben Memuletiwon, who has worked with the Concord Newspapers and lately was Group Sports Editor of The Sun Newspapers, before he joined the SportsDay crew. The team has recently been boosted with the versatile Sam’O Femi Fasetire, as the Weekend Editor, after a year as General Editor of the paper. Fasetire comes with nearly two decades of robust sports journalism.

With such robust team members, SportsDay, has not only come to stay but is at the moment dictating the tunes in the sports media industry. We invite you, sir to please join in reinventing the sports and general media industry by doing business with us.
