Adesanya Receives UFC’s 45-day Medical Suspension

New Zealand’s Nigerian-born mixed martial arts (MMA) star, Israel Adesanya has been given a forced 45-day suspension by the sanctioning body of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), to accord him time to recover from his latest bout, which he won in brutal style last weekend.

Adesanya is to go on the forced hiatus alongside Dustin Poirier, after they both won interim championship belts at UFC 236 on Saturday night in Atlanta, but neither of them had an easy road in their fights for gold.

However, while Adesanya and Poirier were both issued 45-day breaks, following tough bouts, their opponents received longer suspensions from Georgia Entertainment & Athletic Division.

Poirier beat featherweight champ, Max Holloway for the lightweight interim title in the UFC 236 main event at State Farm Arena, in a brutal slugfest that lasted all five rounds and saw the loser’s face burst open.

Poirier escaped with the belt and short suspension, but Holloway is out indefinitely, as he is required to get a CT scan before he will be cleared to fight again.

Adesanya also had a rough bout with Kelvin Gastelum in his quest for the interim middleweight belt, as his opponents proved to be tougher than was expected heading into the big fight.

Though it looked like Adesanya would end the fight early, Gastelum did not only hang in, but dished out a lot of punishment to the eventually winner, who had a battered face after the fight.

However, like Poirier, Adesanya was only issued a 45-day medical halt, while Gastelum was issued an indefinite suspension, pending medical clearance following a CT scan.

The commission in Georgia also issued three other fighters 180-day suspensions pending medical clearance for various possible injuries.
