AFCON 2023: Believe in us, Ahmed Musa tells Nigerians

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has urged Nigerians to believe in the team even as the Jose Peseiro tutored side jetted out to Cote d Ivoire to begin their quest for the fourth AFCON title.

Musa who is currently the most capped Super Eagles player believes that he and his teammates have all it takes to conquer Africa at the 34th edition of AFCON, which takes place in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11.

Musa’s plea came in response to the disappointment in some quarters following Super Eagles loss to Guinea in the pre-tournament friendly played in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

Their one-week training camp in the Middle East came to an end with the game, and has subsequently headed for Abidjan to join other contending teams to will battle for the continental fiesta.

While speaking to NFF TV, Ahmed Musa maintained that the team is confident heading into the AFCON despite the setback that clouded their tournament preparations.

“Everybody is excited and waiting to go to Abidjan”, Musa said. “After the last game in Uyo, when the campaign started, we told ourselves about going there to shine. We can see all the quality in the squad and we can’t say otherwise. In football, anything can happen but we have the confidence.

“Even the coach has set a target of winning the AFCON for himself too. I just want Nigerians to believe in the team, with their support we can go far.”

Eagkes will open their 2023 AFCON campaign in Group A against Equatoria Guinea on January 14, followed by what has been dubbed as battle of the titans between Eagles and hosts Elephants of Cote d Ivoire before rounding up the group stage with clash with Guinea Bissau.

Ivorian and Chelsea great Didier Drogba had earlier identified the Nigerian side as a tough side adding however that no team in the Nations Cup can be dubbed a push over as they have all come to fight to the finish in their quest for the title. The Elephants according to him respect everything and will launch every arsenal in their armory in the games ahead of them.
