AFCON: Blend of youth and experience, good for Team —- Mikel Obi

Super Eagles Captain, Mikel John Obi believes the mixture of youth and experience in the team is a very good combination as they go for glory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt,SportsDay revealed.

The 32-year-old ended his one- year self-imposed exile from international football to earn his 87th senior cap against Zimbabwe on Saturday, positing that there is still room for improvement from the lads despite a goalless draw in Asaba.

“I think the blend of youth and experience is a good one; maybe we missed experienced players like Ndidi and Ighalo, but players like Chukwueze and Kalu showed brilliance.

“I believe they can do great things at the Nations Cup, we just have to keep talking to them we the senior players and the coaches and hopefully we would have a good blend in the competition,” Mikel said.

The former Chelsea midfielder, however, added that he remains committed to the national team and would continue to give his 110% best when called upon to lead the Eagles.

With 87 senior caps spanning a career of 14 years with the senior national team, Mikel now moves to third on the list of the country’s most capped players, 14 games shy of joint holders Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama who both had 101 caps for the country.
