AFCON Qualifier: Eagles intensify training ahead Monrovia clash

The Super Eagles camp in Lagos has continued to swell with intensified shape up ahead of the 2023 CAF African Nations Cup MatchDay 5 qualifier against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.

As at noon today 20 players have hit the Eko Hotel and Suites camp of the team with the remaining three players expected to join the party later today.

The Eagles take on Leone Stars of Sierra Leone at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium, Monrovia which could be dubbed a neutral ground following Sierra Leone inabilty to provide a venue at home.

Vice-captain William Troost-Ekong, Ademola Lookman,Alex Iwobi, Joe Aribo, Kevin Akpoguma, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho were among the early arrivals in camp.

The Jose Peseiro tutored side will be having their first training later tonight at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

Four home-based players; Victor Sochima,Olorunleke Ojo , Ebube Duru and Bendel Insurance FC midfielder Divine Nwachukwu are part of the party. Recall that the coach has been seen in a number of Nigeria premier League venues watching the players do their thing.

Super Eagles are top of their qualification group with nine points out of four matches, followed by Guinea Bissau’s Wild Dogs who have seven points. Leone Stars, who gave the Eagles a tough run in Abuja on Day 1 of the qualification series before succumbing 2-1, are on five points. Sao Tome and Principe, who play the Super Eagles on the final day of the series in September, are bottom with only one point.
