Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has appealed to the Nigeria Football Federation to decide on the matter of coaches that would lead the team throughout their campaign in the AFCON qualifiers.
The uncertainty surrounding the head coach position has been a topic of discussion over the past few months.
Back in June, Ibrahim Gusau, the president of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), stated that a public vote would determine the fate of current head coach Jose Peseiro.
However, as of now, no definitive decision has been made regarding this public vote, leaving the situation hanging in the balance
Rumours have also circulated about the NFF’s intentions to line up a temporary replacement for Peseiro, adding to the ambiguity surrounding the coaching staff.
While the Super Eagles have secured their spot in the 2023 AFCON, their final group game of the qualifier against Sao Tome on September 10 remains a must-honour fixture.
In a recent interview with Arise TV, Omeruo expressed his frustration with the situation, describing it as “crazy” and calling for an “urgent fix.”
The former Leganes star emphasised the importance of stability within the team’s technical crew, stressing that it is vital for Nigeria to have a consistent and reliable coaching staff to achieve their potential.
“When it comes to talent, Nigeria have amazing players,” the Turkey-based centre-back said.
“Even those that are on the bench in the national team go to their club sides and bang in goals week in, week out.
“We need to have a stable technical crew. A technical crew will take us to where we are supposed to be and give us exactly [the guidance] that we get in Europe.
“We do not even know who the coach in the next game will be. It is crazy, and it has to be fixed.”
As it stands, the Super Eagles are leading Group A of the qualification round with 12 points from five games, followed closely by Guinea-Bissau with 10 points.
Sierra Leone occupies the third position with five points, while Sao Tome sits at the bottom of the group with just 1 point.
