AFCON2023Q: Super Eagles pip Guinea-Bissau 1-0

Date:

After suffering a shocking defeat at home against Guinea Bissau on Matchday 3 of the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifier, the Super Eagles bounced back to secure a 1-0 away win against the same opponent.

The Djurtus of Guinea Bissau produced one of the most shocking results on the continent when they secured a 0-1 win against the 3-time African champions Nigeria at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

Guinea Bissau hosting the second leg at Sempbro 24 Stadium in Bissau started the game with a more defensive approach allowing the Super Eagles to dominate the game.

The much-changed Nigerian side has successive chances in the first 20 minutes through Kenneth Omeruo and Samuel Chukwueze but was unable to convert.

The bright spot in the Super Eagle team Bright-Osayi drove into the penalty box and was brought down by the Guinea defender.

The referee awarded a penalty to Nigeria which was well-converted by Moses Simon in the 30th minute as they ended the half in the driving seat.

The second half resumed with the host trying to press more to get the much-needed equalizer but was unable to break down Nigeria’s defense.

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen almost doubled the Nigeria lead but the effort hit the post midway into the second half.

Guinea Bissau tried to peg back Super Eagle to get their equalizer but they failed in their attempt at Nigeria and ran away with a 0-1 win.

The result means that Nigeria returned to the top of the group with 9 points and Guinea Bissau dropped to the second position while Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe occupied 3rd and 4th position respectively.
