The Executive Board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, has received a big pat on the back for not only returning Nigeria to the podium in all international competitions but also for achieving unprecedented feats.
This vote of confidence was given to the executive board led by Tonobok Okowa at the federation’s annual general Congress held on Saturday. Among the feats performed by the Okowa-led board was the return of Nigeria to the podium at the after 13 years courtesy Ese Brume’s long jump bronze medal win.
The board also led Nigeria U20 team to win an unprecedented gold medal haul in the history of the championship. To complete a remarkable 2021, the board also saw Tobi Amusan become the first Nigerian in World Athletics’ Diamond era to win a Diamond League discipline. Last year, Brume returned Nigeria to the World Indoor Championships podium with her silver medal win.
This was achieved 14 years after Olusoji Fasuba last mounted the stage as World Indoor 60m champion. The biggest feat came at the World Outdoor Championships in Oregon, USA where Amusan became Nigeria’s first World champion and the first to set a World outdoor record.
A delighted Okowa who was recently crowned President of African Athletics Region 11 promised on behalf of the board to ensure the board keeps achieving unprecedented results and develop a developmental program
