Akande Blocked By Chelsea From Eaglets’ Camp

Chelsea of England youth team player, Adrian Akande has been blocked by his club from linking up wioth Nigeria’s cadet national team, Golden Eaglets in Abuja, thereby possibly ruling him out of an appearance with Nigeria at this year’s FIFA U17 World Cup in Brazil.

Though the London club received an official invitation from Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for Akande’s release, Chelsea noted that they are not under any obligation to let the lad go, as the Eaglets’ schedule is not on the FIFA calendar for international activities.

Consequently, Akande has not been permitted to fly to Abuja, and will remain at Stamford Bridge in training ahead of the 2019/20 season, for which the ex-Crystal Palace youth team player is rated a key member of Chelsea’s under-16 squad.

This is despite the fact that Akande was a member of the Eaglets’ squad that finished fourth at this year’s African U17 Cup of Nations, though he did not feature in any of their five matches in Tanzania.

While Akande will not be in Abuja, Eaglets’ coach, Manu Garba is hoping to have the presence of three other foreign-based players, all of who are goalkeepers, in West Ham United’s Daniel Jinadu, Bournemouth’s Joseph Oluwabusola and Eintracht Trier 05’s Armin Olayo.
