Reigning World 100m hurdles champion, Tobiloba Amusan may begin her bid for a third consecutive Diamond League crown at the event’s season opener in Doha, Qatar on May 5, 2023 if the high hurdles is included among the disciplines to be competed for at the meet for the second year running.
This outgoing year, the 25 year old Nigerian started her bid in Doha, coming second in a wind-aided 12.44 behind then reigning world record holder, Kendra Harrison of the USA (12.43) as she successfully defended the title she first won in 2021.
The 2023 Diamond League provisional calendar which, for the first time includes 15 host cities across 12 countries and four continents was released Wednesday by World Athletics with the final scheduled to hold outside Europe for the first time in 14 years.
The final will hold in Eugene, Oregon at the Prefontaine Classic and Amusan will be seeking to be, for the third consecutive time, among the 32 Diamond League champions to be crowned across two days of elite athletics action on September 16th and 17th.
Amusan made history in 2021 when she scorched to a then 12.42s African record at the Weltklasse in Zurich, Switzerland to become the first Nigerian in Diamond League era to win a Diamond League discipline.
The Nigerian returned to Zurich again this year as the reigning World and Commonwealth Games 100m hurdles champion and record holder to successfully defend her title with a new 12.29s meeting record.
It was also her 18th legal sub-13 seconds run in 2022.
