The All Progressives Congress (APC) Media Network has condemned former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, for making disparaging remarks about President Bola Tinubu and Nigerian politicians.
Amaechi, who served as the Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari, reportedly accused Tinubu of refusing to relinquish power to the younger generation.
He also allegedly referred to Nigerian politicians as ‘sit-tight’ leaders who cling to power without providing adequate benefits to the people.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Uyo, the Director-General of the APC Media Network, Iniobong John, accused Amaechi of attempting to incite Nigerians against President Tinubu and the political establishment.
The statement reads, “The APC Media Network has taken note of the recent comments made by His Excellency, Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi, regarding Nigerian politicians and their alleged attachment to power. We find it necessary to respond to these comments, as they are not only misguided but also hypocritical.
“Rt Hon Amaechi’s accusation that Nigerian politicians cling to power is a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. Having held different public offices for twenty-four years, Amaechi’s own attachment to power is a matter of public record. His comments are therefore seen as a desperate attempt to deflect attention from his own political ambitions.
“It is imperative to remind Amaechi that his tenure as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation has been marred by controversy and criticism. His handling of public funds and resources has been questioned by many, and his comments on power are seen as an attempt to shift the focus away from his own record.
“Furthermore, Amaechi’s insinuation that President Bola Tinubu would not willingly cede power to the younger generation is wrong, unwarranted, and an incitement against the APC administration.
“It is essential to remind Amaechi that Nigeria is practicing constitutional democracy, where elections are won and lost. His own loss to President Tinubu during the APC’s presidential nomination convention is a testament to this fact”.
The group further said, “We urge Amaechi to reflect on his own career and motivations, rather than making baseless accusations against others. His comments are not only unbecoming of a statesman of his caliber but also a disservice to the APC, a party he is still a member of.
“The APC Media Network wishes to remind Amaechi that as a member of the APC, he should be working towards the advancement of the party’s ideals and principles, rather than engaging in divisive and destructive politics.
“We call on Amaechi to retract his comments and apologize to President Tinubu and the APC. We also urge him to focus on contributing positively to the development of the country, rather than engaging in petty politics”.
