Arsenal’s Arthur Okonkwo Set To Join Olympic Eagles?

Arsenal of England youth team goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo is on the verge of joining Nigeria’s under-23 national team, Olympic Eagles in the coming month.

Although he has already been capped by England at under-16, -17 and -18 levels, Okonkwo is ready to follow steps of former Wolverhampton Wanderers’ shot-stopper, Carl Onuoha Ikeme in switching allegiance to star for Nigeria, starting with the under-23 team.

In their combined efforts to make Okonkwo’s intentions known and become realistic, the youngster’s mentors have already had talks with officials of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the youngster, whose stock at Arsenal has been on a massive rise since 2016.

Although the initial thought was about linking up with the Flying Eagles for this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, Okonkwo has apparently realised that a more feasible option would be with the Olympic Eagles.

Consequently, he is now bound to be invited for the team’s next match in the African U-23 Cup of Nations, against Sudan on May 5, with a follow-up possibility of starring for Nigeria at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo once Imamam Amapakabo’s side qualify.

A credible source affirmed: “Arthur Okonkwo is already mulling over the offer to join Nigeria’s under-23 team before their next game in May.”
