Awaziem Ready For New Challenge At Leganes

Leganes of Spain new signing, Chidozie Awaziem says he is ready for the fresh challenge he is bound to face in La Liga, and hopes to make the best of his latest loan deal from FC Porto of Portugal.

At Leganes, the 22-year-old Awaziem will play alongside fellow-Super Eagles’ defender, Kenneth Omeruo, who he believes will help him to settle down fast and fit into the club’s scheme of activities.

After moving to Porto in the summer of 2014, Awaziem has made just 15 appearances for the club’s first team including his debut in the UEFA Champions League against Galatasaray of Turkey last season.

It is a third straight loan spell away from Porto for Awaziem, who played six of Nigeria’s seven matches as they finished third at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, and he says he wants to make the best of it

After previous loan spells at FC Nantes of France and Caykur Rizespor of Turkey, where he played all 16 games as the club made a dramatic turnaround in the second round to finish 11th and avoid relegation, Awaziem says he is now bracing for another challenge in Spain.

Despite again failing to break into Porto’s main squad, Awaziem joined Rizespor in the winter transfer market, quickly establishing himself as a regular with the team as he featured in 16 games to help them survive relegation.

The dreadlocks-wearing defender, who was part of Nigeria’s under-23 team, Olympic Eagles that beat Libya 4-0 during the second leg of their African U-23 Cup of Nations qualifier in Asaba, got his biggest spotlight at AFCON 2019, which set him up for his move to Spain.

Awaziem told BBC Sport: “Every new move comes with a different challenge, but I love to challenge myself.

“The Spanish League is exciting and watched by millions back home in Nigeria, so I am ready to do my best at Leganes.”
