United States forward Folarin Balogun has revealed that his goal celebration against Paraguay was a tribute to Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi, whom he credited with playing a significant role in his development.

Balogun was among the standout performers as the United States secured victory, scoring twice in an impressive display. However, it was his celebration after finding the net that drew widespread attention.

After scoring, the striker lifted his jersey to unveil a shirt bearing the message, “Thank you 17,” prompting speculation among fans and observers about the identity of the person being honoured.

The former Arsenal forward later explained that the gesture was dedicated to Iwobi, acknowledging the Nigerian international’s support and influence during a crucial stage of his career.

Balogun said the tribute was his way of expressing gratitude to a player he regards highly, describing Iwobi’s guidance and encouragement as invaluable to his growth on and off the pitch.

Balogun later provided the answer, explaining that the celebration was dedicated to Iwobi, who has worn the number 17 throughout much of his professional career.

The revelation transformed what appeared to be a simple goal celebration into a personal message of gratitude from one footballer to another.

Balogun explained that his connection to the Nigerian international dates back to their time together at Arsenal, where Iwobi played an important role in helping him navigate the early stages of his career.

“When I was at Arsenal, he was a mentor who helped guide me at an important stage of my career. This goal was dedicated to him,” Balogun said after showering.

The tribute highlighted the lasting influence experienced players can have on younger teammates behind the scenes, often away from public attention.
