…As Team’s Rebuilding Process Begins
The interim Board of Bayelsa United and the organizers of Nigeria’s largest grassroots football spectacle the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament tagged the “Prosperity Cup”, have announced a one-week pre-season football tournament in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
This is contained in a statement signed by the chairman of the club, Dr. Peter Singabele and the Director General of Prosperity Cup, Mr. Ono Akpe, who doubles as a board member of the Interim Board of Bayelsa United, ahead of the one week pre-season tournament.
The statement notes that the tournament will see fourteen teams jostling for glory in the competition with the Prosperity Cup quarter finalists and other Yenagoa-based sides, as well as three teams from outside the state, including Ereme Jackson of Port-Harcourt, Excellent FC of Ughelli and 36 Lions of Sapele, battling each other in the competition.
It explains that the Yenagoa-based teams are the Prosperity Cup finalists, Akinima/Biogbo; Mountain of the Lord Deliverance Ministry, MLDM FC; Krosaders FC; Brazil FC; Mountain of Fire Miracle Ministry, MFM FC; Bayelsa United Feeders; Federal University Kings, FUO Kings Otuoke Grassroots FC; NDU Oilers; Orange Boys and Bayelsa Starlets Academy.

According to the statement, the programme would serve as a viable catchment platform to discover young and vibrant talents that would be integrated into Bayelsa United, maintaining that the initiative is in line with the vision of the governor in seeing outstanding young talents from Bayelsa in the team.
The statement further explains that the one-week exercise will kick-off from Wednesday, 22nd through the 29th of July, 2026 with hostilities commencing 10.00am daily at the Samson Siasia Stadium, adding that the tournament would open a new chapter for home-grown talents in the State.
It urges all the teams participating in the tournament to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and adhere to the rules of the tournament, stating that the exercise is capable of exposing Bayelsa-born players beyond Bayelsa United.
The statement notes that the exercise would be supervised by the newly-appointed Technical Team led by the Technical Adviser/Chief Coach of Bayelsa United Abdul Maikaba and his assistant, Ngozi Elechi as well as a technical team for the Prosperity Cup as preparation for the new NNL season gets underway for the former Aiteo cup champions.
”We are delighted to announce this Pre-season tournament that will see fourteen (14) teams participating in the competition, including the Prosperity Cup finalists and other club sides in Bayelsa. The tourney will have three teams from outside Bayelsa”, the statement said.
”The idea of the tournament is to spot outstanding talents that will be infused into Bayelsa United because we want to see our team return to the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL immediately, we believe that the surest way to get talents is at the grassroots through platforms like this”, the statement added.
”As you are aware this is an initiative from the new board in line with the governor’s vision to discover home-grown talents for Bayelsa United that will feature in the NNL league” it stated.
