The Senate on Wednesday suspended some items on its Order Paper to commence the screening of General Christopher Musa, immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, as the new Minister of Defence.

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, read President Bola Tinubu’s letter forwarding Musa’s nomination at the plenary session.

The screening followed a motion by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), seconded by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South). The Senate then resolved into a Committee of the Whole to facilitate the process.

General Musa began his address to the senators at 2:15 p.m., introducing himself and outlining his perspective on Nigeria’s security challenges. He described terrorists as “evil forces that do not wish the country well” and stressed that “all hands must be on deck” to defeat them. He further warned that the nation’s borders remain porous and must be secured.

Senators are currently questioning the nominee.
