Joseph Atule scored twice, and former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye added another goal as Enyimba thrashed Mozambique’s Black Bulls 4-1 in their CAF Confederation Cup Group D clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.
The People’s Elephant put on an impressive performance in matchday four of the competition, netting two goals in each half, with all four goals coming from their attacking players—Atule, Ideye, and Ifeanyi Ihemekwele.
In coach Stanley Eguma’s first continental match in charge of Enyimba, the hosts dominated the match, forcing an early mistake from the Black Bulls goalkeeper.
A poor pass from the keeper was intercepted by Atule, who made no mistake in converting the chance to give Enyimba a 1-0 lead after just six minutes.
However, Black Bulls quickly responded in the 12th minute when Ejaita Ifoni capitalized on sloppy defending to equalize, making it 1-1.
Despite a few missed opportunities, Enyimba regained the lead just before halftime when Ihemekwele produced a brilliant half-volley from the edge of the box to score his fifth goal of the season.
His strike ensured Enyimba went into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
Enyimba continued to press for more goals in the second half, and it was Ideye who made an impact, scoring his first goal for the club.
After coming on as a substitute, the 36-year-old controlled a pass, dribbled past the goalkeeper, and finished from a tight angle to make it 3-1.
Atule wrapped up the victory with his second goal in the 90th minute, sealing the 4-1 scoreline and securing all three points for Enyimba.
The win moved Enyimba to four points in Group D, although they remain in fourth place, tied on points with third-placed Black Bulls.
Enyimba’s chances of progressing to the knockout stage have improved, with just one point separating them from second-placed Al Masry, and three points between them and Zamalek.
