Celtic stunned by 90th min Motherwell equaliser

Date:

Jonathan Obika headed in a 90th minute equaliser for Motherwell as Celtic failed to extend their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 11 points after a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

The Hoops looked to have ended the visitors’ stubborn resistence at Celtic Park when David Turnbull opened the scoring from the penalty spot four minutes from time.

But just like when Celtic snatched victory when the sides last met at Fir Park in September, there was more late drama.

Obika glanced home Blair Spittal’s corner to give Rangers fresh hope in the title race.

Philippe Clement’s men, who are in action at Aberdeen on Sunday, have two games in hand to close a nine-point deficit on Celtic at the top of the table.

Celtic had over 80 per cent possession but failed to make it count.

Luis Palma earlier had a second-half penalty saved by Liam Kelly and Yang Hyun-jun missed a glorious chance to open the scoring.

Celtic thought they had found a winner when Turnbull converted a second spot-kick after Calum Butcher pulled back Mikey Johnston.

“A draw at home always feels like a defeat,” said Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

“You need that quality and that bit of finesse in the final third. Sadly, we didn’t quite have that today.”

St. Mirren remain in third after beating bottom-of-the-table Livingston 1-0 at home.

Hearts ended former manager Craig Levein’s unbeaten start to life as St Johnstone boss with a 1-0 win at Tynecastle.

Hibernian beat Dundee 2-1 to move up to fifth.
