Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has said his foremost goal is to lead Nigeria to a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) crown, describing the task as both an honour and a personal mission.
Chelle, who assumed duty in January 2025, has rejuvenated the team’s fortunes with four wins and two draws in six matches, amassing 14 points from a possible 18 in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.
In an interview with CAFOnline.com, the Franco-Malian tactician expressed immense pride in managing the three-time African champions, noting that the team’s resurgence reflects the players’ commitment and the nation’s footballing heritage.
“It’s something huge — Nigeria is a massive team with incredible aura and heritage. Coaching this side is a source of immense pride,” he said.

Born to a French father and Malian mother, Chelle emphasized that his role transcends football:
“For me, this is about unity, respect, and values beyond sport. I may be French-Malian by birth, but now, I am fully Nigerian in spirit and commitment.”
Nigeria will face Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in Group C of AFCON 2025, and Chelle insists there are “no small teams.”
“We’re going to Morocco to win. That’s the objective,” he stated confidently. “If we arrive in form after the playoffs, stopping us will be very difficult.”
Meanwhile, Chelle will reportedly lead part of the Super Eagles backroom staff to Morocco for the 2026 World Cup Playoffs.
The Super Eagles delegation will depart Abuja on Sunday morning for their training camp in Rabat, Morocco.
The camp opens the same day ahead of the crucial AFCON semifinal playoff against Gabon, scheduled for November 13, with kick-off fixed for 5 p.m.
Winners of the encounter will face either DR Congo or Cameroon in the final playoff for Africa’s sole ticket to the Intercontinental Playoffs in Mexico, slated for March 2026.
