Chukwueze Back In Spanish La Liga’s Relegation Zone

Villarreal of Spain youngster, Samuel Chukwueze and his teammates cut a sorry sight at the weekend, as they failed to step up from their 4-4 heroics against Barcelona and dropped back into La Liga’s relegation zone, following last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Real Betis.

Chukwueze and Cameroonian youngster, Toko Ekambi could not score on the Sunday evening fixture away to Betis, with all their efforts in the game not enough to prevent Villarreal from losing and slumping back into La Liga’s bottom three.

Chukwueze and Ekambi, who have 23 goals between them this season both drew blanks, as Villarreal slipped behind Real Valladolid with seven games to play, on an evening the team missed an 89th minute penalty.

The depth of Chukwueze’s agony was highlighted by former Arsenal star, Santi Cazorla, who was left inconsolable, after missing a very, very late penalty that would have lifted Villarreal out of the relegation zone.

Cazorla went straight down the middle from the penalty spot, but Pau Lopez called his bluff, and the Spaniard was in tears following the final whistle after failing to secure a 2-2 draw.

Following the match, Cazorla was heart-breakingly left in floods of tears inside the stadium as one of Villarreal’s staff tried to console the star, who Chuwkwueze has dubbed his role model in the squad.

The 34-year-old, who has made a remarkable comeback from an Achilles injury after 668 days out, which nearly saw him lose his leg, will be determined to reverse his fortunes when The Yellow Submarine step onto the pitch next, as his side are 18th with seven matches remaining.

A draw would have taken Chukweuze’s side up to 17th place, one point above relegation rivals Valladolid on the log, but they slipped back into relegation zone at a crunch point in what has been a very tough season.

Chukwueze and his pals will now seek some consolation of sort against La Liga rivals, Valencia in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday, with the winner over the two legs set to face either Arsenal or Napoli.

After that, Villarreal face Girona away with three points a necessity against a team not out of the relegation battle just yet.
