Chukwueze: I Would Have Loved To Play U-20 World Cup

Villarreal of Spain winger, Samuel Chukweuze has confessed that he would have loved to play for Nigeria at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, and still make the senior squad’s list to the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Chukwueze was eventually forced by his club to pick only one of the two major com[petitions and, despite the Flying Eagles fumbling to a round of 16 exit at the feet of Senegal in Poland, the Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup revelation says he would have locfved to be in the U20 team.

He, however, went on to declare that he has nothing against his La Liga club’s decision to restrict him only to Nigeria’s AFCON 2019 campaign, as he acknowledges that The Yellow Submarine officials mean well for him.

It is now up to Chukwueze to prove his mettle with the Eagles at Egypt 2019, ahead of which he has been named among the top fifty under-20 players worldwide, following his exploits in his first season in La Liga.

The youngster, who was in top gear for the Eagles durign Saturday’s 0-0 international friendly against Zimbabwe, made top marks as a rookie in the 2018/19 season, and his form has now been recognised by respected French sports daily, L’Equipe.

The Diamond Academy product is ranked 25th among 50 under-20 lads that were rated him in terms of their efforts in the past term, but his spot is still higher than that of the more celebrated quartet of Chelsea’s Mason Mount (30th), Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes (31st), Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot (34th) and Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz (38th).

The figures are based on Chukwueze’s escalating marks throughout last season, during which he played 38 games across all competitions for Villarreal, with eight goals and three assists to his name, which fetched him a release clause of €63m from The Yellow Submarine.

Although he admitted he would have loved to show his mettle at the Youth Mundial, Chukwueze added that he is very happy to be part of the 23 players to represent Nigeria at AFCON 2019, which is scheduled to kick of June 21, while the Eagles start out against Burundi on June 22.

Chukwueze told SportsDay: “We are going to Egypt for represent our country with so much love and respect.

“What can I say, first I think my club made a good choice for allowing me to play only in AFCON.

“I am only asking my fans to continue praying and given all their support till the end competition.

“But I would have love to play both in Under 20 World Cup and African Cup of nation as well.”
