Chukwueze Needs Rest After Hectic Season – Rohr

Villarreal of Spain winger, Samuel Chukwueze might have received the backing of Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr, for him to skip playing at the FIFA U-20 World Cup and concentrate on the Africa Cup of Nations.

This follows an acknowledgement by Rohr that the youngster needs to rest after passing through a hectic debut season with Villarreal in La Liga, and he may not be able to play two major competitions back-to-back.

Chukwueze is in the Flying Eagles’ provisional list for this month’s Youth Mundial in Poland, which will end just as AFCON 2019 is starting in Egypt, for which the in-form winger is also in contention.

However, officials at his club are not inclined to allowing him play in both competitions, as The Yellow Submarine fear he would suffer a burn-out, which Rohr has now admitted has to be avoided.

Reports emerged on Saturday that Chukwueze had opted out of the Flying Eagles’ plans and decided to focus fully on the Nations Cup, but Rohr hinted few hours later that the matter has not been laid to rest.

Rather than make a categorical declaration on the matter, though, Rohr has suggested that he will hold talks with Chukwueze and Flying Eagles’ coach, Paul Aigbogun on the matter, as he reckons the lad is still angling to feature in both competitions.

Rohr declared: “The state of mind is still 100% focused on the AFCON. He can become a very good player indeed.

“But, we have a problem with Villarreal, which does not want him to play the two competitions – the AFCON with us and the U20 World Cup.

”We must see how we can solve this, because he has not had much rest for two years. We must preserve his health.”
