Nigeria’s Rosemary Chukwuma bowed out of the women’s 100m heats at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Saturday.

The 23-year-old, Nigeria’s sole representative in the event, ran in Heat 2 but did not advance to the semi-finals, finishing outside the top three automatic qualification spots and missing out on the fastest losers’ places.

Jamaica’s Tina Clayton and Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith dominated the race, advancing comfortably alongside Poland’s Ewa Swoboda.

Chukwuma had gone into the championships ranked 61st in the world with a season’s best of 11.03s, set at the Star Athletics Sprint Series in Florida in June.

She was seen as one of the country’s brightest hopes in Tokyo in the absence of Tima Godbless and Favour Ofili, who were unavailable for the competition.

The former African U-20 champion has been a consistent figure for Nigeria in recent years, reaching the semi-finals of the 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympics and contributing to relay medals, including African Games gold and Commonwealth bronze.

She first announced herself to the world stage in 2018, when she claimed gold in the 100m at the Youth Olympics.
