Commonwealth Games 2022: Mixed fortunes for Team Nigeria on day two

Date:

It was a bitter-sweet outing for Team Nigeria on day two at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Team Nigeria started day one on an impressive note recording victories in different categories in the Table Tennis event.

But the situation changed on day two with the women’s team failing to replicate their performance from the opening day.

The men’s team top Group C after brushing aside Cyprus 3-0 in the team event.

Team Nigeria ladies produced a stunning 2-2 comeback against England but eventually bowed out 3-2.

The duo of Fatima Bello and Edem Offiong also lost to Charlotte Bardsley and Maria Tsaptsinos in three sets (11-6, 11-8, 14-12) in the women’s doubles event.

And in the singles, Ojomu Ajoke lost 11-6, 7-11, 8-11, 11-3, 9-11 to Bardsley.

Edem however restored Team Nigeria’s pride by beating Tsaptinos to the quarter-final ticket in another women’s singles clash.

She won 3-1 (4-11, 11-9, 13-11, 12-10).

In Weightlifting, Emmanuel Appah finished in fifth position in the 61KG men’s event.

It was another disappointing showing for Team Nigeria in the Boxing event as Bolanle Shogbamu failed to make it past Round of 16.
