Justice Florence Fiberesima of the Oyibo High Court of Rivers State, sitting at the State Judiciary Complex in Port Harcourt, has adjourned indefinitely two suits filed by Governor Siminialayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Ordu, challenging ongoing impeachment proceedings against them by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The lawmakers had last week initiated impeachment moves against the governor and his deputy over alleged constitutional breaches, particularly on issues relating to financial appropriation.

In response, Fubara and Ordu filed separate ex parte applications seeking interim injunctions to restrain the Speaker, Mr Martin Amaewhule, 25 other lawmakers and the Clerk of the House from taking further steps in the impeachment process.

The applicants also asked the court to bar the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Simeon Amadi, from receiving the impeachment notice or constituting a seven-member investigative panel pending the determination of the substantive suits.

The court had earlier granted the interim reliefs and fixed Friday, January 23, 2026, for hearing. However, at the resumed sitting on Thursday, counsel to the defendants, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr S.I. Amen, informed the court of their intention to appeal and orally applied for an adjournment sine die to enable the appellate court determine the issues.

Lead counsel to the claimants, Mr Paul Orikoro and Mr Lawrence Oko-jaja (SAN), did not oppose the application, following which Justice Fiberesima granted the request and adjourned the suits indefinitely.
