Dare: Football Won’t Get Preferential Attention

The new minister of sports, Sunday Akinlabi Dare has declared that he will not give football any preferential attention during his tenure, as he pointed out that his terms of reference includes youth development and all aspects of the sporting sector.

While also affirming that he has to key into President Muhammadu Buhari’s next level agenda, Dare said he has many challenges to face and called for total support from all Nigerians.

The communications expert, journalist, editor and lawyer added that he has an 11-point agenda to meet up with and declared further on his assumption of office in Abuja, following the inauguration of the new cabinet by President Buhari earlier on Wednesday.

Dare disclosed further during Radio Nigeria Network News that the mandate before him is very clear, and he will do the best he can to keep it to the letter, as he wants to revitalize the sector that he says is very dear to the heart of many Nigerians.

He also acknowledged that there will be a lot of pressure on him from sports lovers in and outside the country, as he admitted the sector is very sensitive and widely followed, but assured that he is determined to make the best of his latest appointment.

The new minister, who is said to be a keen supporter and fan of Crown FC of Ogbomosho, the city where he hails from in Oyo State, went on to prophecy that sports stories will begin to make front page headlines and feature points during his tenure, as he wants to reposition the terrain.

Dare added: “We will not focus only on football because, beyond soccer, we have other sports; we also have youth development. Our mandate is very clear – we have youths, we have sports. So, it’s not going to be just soccer.

“I know the challenges of this ministry. It is a ministry that is dear to the hearts of every Nigerian. This means the expectations from me are very high, and I need total support from everyone to make things work.”
