Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons’ coach, Thomas Dennerby has admitted his side may not be able to reach the quarter-final of this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, but says they should make it to the round of 16.

The 59-year-old tactician from Sweden, who took his home country to third place at the Female Mundial in 2011, confessed that it is harder to achieve a similar feat nowadays, but promised to give his best to ensure the Falcons go beyond the first round at France 2019.

He went on to enthuse that giving their best could translate into a surge further in the competition for the Nigerian lasses, especially as he says they have received adequate preparations heading into the competition.

With the competition now just round the corner, starting next Friday in Paris, a day before Nigeria play Norway in their first game in Reims, Dennerby believes the squad has been prepared adequately to do well in France.

The Falcons will on Sunday play yet another international friendly, as they battle away to Slovakia, in what would be a third full-fledged grade-A international friendly for the side, who have also featured in two tune-up invitational tournaments already.

Dennerby told Reuters: “Our ambition is to get to the last 16 at least.

“These days, it’s much harder to go to the quarter-finals because the teams are so much stronger.

“It’s going to need a really strong performance. I hope that we can do that and get through to the round of 16, then win one more game.

“The team have the capacity to do that. We have really worked hard to be the best Nigerian team ever to go to the World Cup.”
