Dikko: We Have To Get Things Right In Nigerian League

League Management Company (LMC) chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko has reiterated his zeal and determination to ensure the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) hits high standards and achieves better quality on all levels, as he says his passion for the game gets better each day.

Speaking against the backdrop of preparations for the new season, which is billed to commence on the 22nd of next month, Dikko said his vision is to improve on the gains achieved during the last campaign, which he insists was successful to a large extent.

He added during a radio sports progamme monitored in Lagos that the LMC will now work harder to consolidate the gains of last season, which he said showed to a large extent that things can go well in the domestic league, when all hands are on deck to steady the ship.

The soft-spoken soccer administrator, who is also second vice-president of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) enthused that Nigerians will see a better level of organisation and administration once the season begins on Sunday, September 22 and will run until May 17 next year.

Unlike last season, where an abridged format was used and champion was determined after a post-season Super-6 play-off in Lagos, Dikko said the 2019/2020 championship will return to the 38-matchday approach, with a mid-season break from December 30 to January 10.

Enyimba are the defending champions, having won a record eight league titles, the latest of which came in the past campaign, which some critics ridiculed for having an abridged format, but Dikko said it was a success and assured that this edition will be better if everyone makes it work.

Dikko declared: “We have to get it right. We have to do better this season. What we did last season showed we can do something good.

“We want to build on what we achieved last season, work even better to get better results and standards. We’ll keep trying to get better.”
