DR Congo rallied from an early setback to beat Nigeria 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the CAF World Cup playoff final in Rabat, securing a place in the intercontinental playoffs in March.
Nigeria struck early in the third minute as Frank Onyeka capitalised on a defensive error, guiding a deflected shot past goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. DR Congo equalised in the 32nd minute when Meschack Elia lifted the ball over Stanley Nwabali after Cedric Bakambu’s cross fell into his path.

The second half and extra time saw few clear chances, with DR Congo having two goals disallowed. Nigeria made six substitutions, including replacing Victor Osimhen at half-time, but struggled to regain attacking fluency.
The penalty shootout started nervously for both sides. Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon missed, while Samuel Moutoussamy was denied for DR Congo. The decisive moment came when substitute goalkeeper Dimitry Fayulu saved Semi Ajayi’s penalty, allowing captain Chancel Mbemba to convert the winning spot-kick and send Congolese fans into celebration.
DR Congo now await an intercontinental opponent for a chance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria, hoping to return after missing the 2022 tournament, face a second consecutive disappointment.
