Efe Ajagba: Elbow Injury Slowed Me Down

USA-based Nigerian boxer, Efe Ajagba has disclosed that he would have done better in his latest fight, but for an elbow injury he copped during the course of the bout with World Boxing Organisation (WBO) European heavyweight champion, Ali Eren Demirezen.

Although Ajagba ensured Demirezen got his first ever defeat as a pro boxer, by recording a unanimous decision at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, USA, he believes it would have been a knock-out had he not been hurt midway through the fight.

Despite struggling after getting hurt, it turned out to be a hefty win for the Nigerian fast-rising pugilist, as all three judges scored the fight with score cards of 99-91, 99-91 and 97-93 in favor of Ajagba, whose record shot to an impressive undefeated stretch in 11 fights.

However, the Nigerian fighter admitted it was a tough night for him, with his opponent being the first to take him to the distance, and he refused to give any excuse for the elbow injury that slowed him down.

He went on to thank his coach for giving himm the right tips to overcome the tough moments of the fight, and disclosed that he had to resort to using his towering physique throughout the ten-round contest, during which he landed 191 punches out of 877.

Ajagba said: “I hurt my elbow early on, so I couldn’t shoot my right hand like I wanted. But I won’t use that as an excuse.

“This was the first fighter to take me the distance. He was strong and could take my punches.

“My trainer just told me to keep using my jab and stay in the middle of the ring. As a tall man I had to use the jab and if it went the distance, that was my best way to win.”
