The curtain may have fallen on the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, tagged Edo 2026, but the resounding success of Team Edo continues to reverberate across the region following a historic performance that saw the host state clinch an unprecedented 111 medals to emerge overall champions of the regional sporting fiesta.

Competing in a highly charged and fiercely competitive atmosphere, Team Edo displayed exceptional determination, discipline, and sporting excellence throughout the tournament. The team’s remarkable performance produced 52 gold, 34 silver, and 25 bronze medals, securing Edo State’s dominance on the medal table and breaking a 24-year jinx in the regional competition.

The impressive outing once again underscores Edo State’s reputation as a formidable powerhouse in Nigerian sports and highlights the impact of strategic leadership within the state’s sports administration.

At the centre of the achievement is the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, whose leadership and reforms have played a pivotal role in repositioning Edo as a hub of sporting excellence.

Since assuming office, Enabulele has championed a comprehensive approach to sports development, placing strong emphasis on grassroots talent discovery, improved training infrastructure, athlete welfare, and professional coaching systems. His proactive and hands-on leadership style has created a structured environment where athletes are motivated to perform at their highest level.

Observers note that the remarkable medal haul was not accidental but rather the result of careful planning, effective coordination, and a performance-driven management system anchored on discipline, accountability, and excellence.

A breakdown of the medal tally reflects the team’s strength across multiple sporting disciplines.

Weightlifting emerged as the standout event for Team Edo, delivering an impressive 17 gold and 7 silver medals, accounting for 24 medals in total. Swimming also produced a strong showing with 10 gold, 8 silver, and 2 bronze medals, bringing its total contribution to 20 medals.

In Athletics, the team secured 21 medals comprising 7 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze, while Wrestling added 4 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals to the state’s tally.

Other sports also made significant contributions. Scrabble and Para Powerlifting each delivered three gold medals, while Table Tennis and Tennis produced two gold medals apiece. Chess also secured a gold medal for the state.

Combat sports including Taekwondo and Boxing added valuable medals, while Traditional Wrestling recorded a gold medal performance.

Team sports such as Volleyball, Handball, and Football also contributed silver and bronze medals, highlighting the depth of Edo’s participation across different sporting categories.

Significantly, the 111-medal haul represents the highest medal tally ever recorded by a participating state in the history of the Niger Delta Games. Team Edo competed in 17 medal-yielding sports, finishing 13 gold medals ahead of Delta State while dethroning the defending champions with a commanding 27-gold advantage, setting a new benchmark for excellence in the regional competition.

The achievement has further strengthened Edo State’s standing as a breeding ground for elite sporting talents in Nigeria, with athletes and coaches expressing renewed confidence in the state’s sports development framework.

The success story also reflects the strong backing of the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, whose administration continues to prioritise sports as a critical platform for youth empowerment, talent development, and social cohesion.

According to Hon. Enabulele, the governor’s sports development agenda focuses on identifying, nurturing, and exposing young talents to national and international competitions, a vision that was clearly demonstrated through Team Edo’s commanding performance at the games.

With the momentum generated from the historic outing, the Edo State Sports Commission is already mapping out new strategies to sustain the state’s dominance and surpass the achievements recorded at the 2026 Niger Delta Games.

For many observers, the message from Edo is clear: with visionary leadership, sustained government investment, and a rising generation of talented athletes, the future of sports in Edo State looks not only promising but poised for even greater triumphs in the years ahead.
