EPL: Arsenal spend £115m to fulfill Arteta’s first XI dream

It’s been another summer of investment at Arsenal, with more than £115million spent and five players joining Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos, Matt Turner, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have all arrived at the Emirates. All of Arsenal’s business was done fairly early in the window, with the last transfer completed on July 22. Having said that, they did attempt to sign midfielder Douglas Luiz on deadline day but were unable to agree a fee with Aston Villa.

Looking at the Gunners’ deals, their squad is undeniably stronger than it was 12 months ago. That’s shown in the first few weeks of the Premier League season as Arsenal have won all five of their opening games to sit top of the table, above champions Manchester City.

Last season, it would’ve been fair to say Arteta had a good starting XI. Now, the Spaniard has a good squad. Although they haven’t got the depth of City or Liverpool, they’ve got cover in a lot of positions – particularly at the back – and versatility.

Aaron Ramsdale remains Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper and is now undisputed following Bernd Leno’s move to Fulham. Turner will provide cover, yet the American remains unproven in the Premier League. Arsenal fans will be hoping Ramsdale stays fit.

At right-back, Takehiro Tomiyasu seemed the obvious choice six months ago – yet the emergence of William Saliba at centre-back has pushed Ben White out wide. The Englishman looks set for a long-spell at right-back, with Tomiyasu playing a supporting role.

Despite the arrival of Zinchenko, Kieran Tierney is set to be Arsenal’s left-back this term. Yet the Scotland international doesn’t have a great record with injuries and Zinchenko will be ready to step in when needed. He can also play in central and attacking midfield.

Speaking of midfield, Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka are expected to continue their partnership in the middle of the park. New signing Vieira – the namesake of Arsenal legend Patrick – and Albert Sambi Lokonga will compete for a place in the side.
