Chelsea have not actually escaped being relegated from the Premier League this season.

Frank Lampard, who was appointed to take charge of the team following the sack of Graham Potter a couple of weeks ago, has lost all six matches, falling 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last night.

The Blues have been relegated six times from the top flight of English football, the last time being in the 1987-88 season after losing relegation playoff to Middlesborough.

They have been ever present in the Premier League until this season, which might likely end as the worst in their history,

The Blues, mathematically at least, can still be relegated from this season, having been defeated in 13 games and managing just 39 points from their 32 games, sitting in 12th place in the table.

Judging by their current form, their remaining fixtures are scary with games lined up against the likes of Bournemouth on May 6, Nottingham Forest on May 13, Manchester City on May 21, Manchester United on May 25 and Newcastle United on May 28.

Chelsea have just 9 points separating them with 18th-place Nottingham Forest, while Leicester City and Leeds, who occupy the 16th and 17th respectively, are also nine points adrift of the Blues.

This means that should Chelsea lose all of their remaining matches and Forest, Leicester and Leeds gather at least ten points from their remaining four games, the Blues would be heading to the Championship.

Bournemouth have 39 points, Wolves, 37 and West Ham on 34 points and should they pick at least more points to overtake Lampard’s men, it would spell doom for the west London side.

In reality, however, the Blues would certainly keep their place in the top flight of English football next season.

Birmingham City were the last club to be relegated from the Premier League with 39 points in the 2010-11 season.
