Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, has revealed one major mistake made by the club’s manager, Erik ten Hag, that led to their 6-3 defeat to city rivals, Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday.
Scholes faulted ten Hag’s decision to play Christian Eriksen in the central midfield instead of former Real Madrid man, Casemiro.
According to the former United midfielder, the Dutch manager was carried away by the success the combination of Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes has recorded against lesser teams this season forgetting it would be a different ball game with City who parade some of the best midfield players in the world.
Man City defeated Man United at Etihad Stadium, thanks to three goals each from Haaland and England international Phil Foden.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Scholes explained, “I think a lot of their goals could’ve been prevented. I think team selection possibly might have been wrong.
“I think he was carried away by the Eriksen Fernandes thing. Eriksen is predominantly an attacking player now for him to play in that central midfield role against lesser teams is great but once against a Manchester City, against a top class team you don’t know where you are because you’ve got so many top quality players around you and they keep the ball a lot.
“You’ve got the likes of Bernado Silva around you, Kevin De Bruyne coming at you. You just don’t know where you are. It’s a totally different world when you’re playing against the so-called lesser teams.
“I mean you can find out today… that’s why you need a defensive midfield player who plays the position really well. He knows what’s behind him, he knows what’s before him, he knows when to press and when to sit back… I think he had a player like that with great experience on the bench, Casemiro, he would’ve been a lot more suited to.”
