Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has said VAR was wrong to deny Chelsea two penalties during their 4-1 defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.

Ferdinand claimed those decisions could have changed the dynamic of the game.

First, Reds captain, Virgil van Dijk leaned into Conor Gallagher early on, forcing the Chelsea midfielder to hit the ground inside the box.

Referee Paul Tierney waved for play to continue and VAR agreed with the on-field decision.

Van Dijk was also involved in the second incident, clipping Christopher Nkunku inside the penalty area. The incident was again reviewed by VAR and cleared.

After the game, Ferdinand said: “I can’t believe VAR hasn’t seen that and not given the penalties. VAR is meant to help in these situations.

“How have they looked at those two incidents and not thought they were penalties [for Chelsea]?
