Etafia Set For Return To Action At Age 36+

Former Super Eagles’ goalkeeper, Greg Etafia is set to make a return to active football in South Africa, as he has been registered officially as a player with top-flight outfit, Highlands Park, just two months before the ex-Plateau United of Jos shot-stopper clocks 37.

The development comes three years after he last played actively in the Rainbow Nation with relegated Moroka Swallows in the National First Division, but the ex-international has been formally registered again for this campaign by Highlands Park.

Highlands confirmed that Etafia will be one of three back-up options to their first choice keeper, Marlon Heugh, alongside Thela Ngobeni and Tapuwa Kapini, the last of who at 35.

Is a step forward in the same direction from last season, when Highlands registered Etafia towards the end of campaign as cover, when there was a threat that injuries in the goalkeepers’ department might limit them.

Etafia, who moved to South Africa in 2002, played a total of 359 games for Swallows in 13 seasons with the team, winning the Nedbank Cup in 2009 and MTN8 in 2012, but will now get a double role with Highlands, as he will continue as goalkeeping coach of the club’s MDC side.

The Kaduna-born star, who turns 37 in September, had a brief spell at Free State Stars, then went back to Swallows when they were relegated from the top flight, taking over as coach when they were in the National First Division in the 2015-16 season, which ended with them relegated
