The Federal Government has lauded Ogun State for its ongoing dedication to hosting a top-tier National Sports Festival as the event approaches.
On Wednesday, in Abeokuta, the Organizing Committee (LOC), with strong backing from the National Sports Commission (NSC), officially announced Premium Trust Bank as the lead sponsor for the festival, marking a historic partnership.
Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), praised Ogun State’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and memorable festival. He stressed the vital role of corporate and private sector support in shaping the future of Nigerian sports, aligning with the NSC’s vision.
“The unveiling of Premium Trust Bank as the lead sponsor for the 2024 National Sports Festival is a clear indication of the growing confidence of the private sector in Nigerian sports. Ogun State has shown remarkable dedication, and this partnership is a significant step toward elevating the festival to exceptional standards,” Dikko said.
He further highlighted the economic and social impact of the festival, pointing out its potential to enhance tourism, create jobs, and boost the local economy.
“Beyond the excitement of competition, the Gateway Games 2024 will foster economic growth, create opportunities for young athletes, and position Ogun State as a sports hub while showcasing its economic potential. The National Sports Commission fully supports this vision and will ensure all necessary assistance for its success, leaving a lasting legacy for the state,” Dikko added.
“This festival is not just about sports; it is a celebration of talent, resilience, and the limitless possibilities of Nigerian sports. With Ogun State’s preparation and the commitment of all stakeholders, I am confident the Gateway Games 2024 will be the most outstanding edition yet,” Dikko stated.
The NSC will continue working closely with the host state to provide the necessary support to ensure a successful event.
The National Sports Festival, often referred to as the Nigerian Olympics, is organized by the National Sports Commission and is expected to feature over 20,000 participants from all 36 states and the FCT, with the addition of Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) as the 38th state.
The competition will take place from May 16 to May 30, 2025.
