FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy Arrives Abuja Thursday

Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja is agog, in anticipation of the arrival of the FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy on Thursday.

World governing body, FIFA informed Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that former Super Eagles’ striker, Peter Osaze Odemwingie, who is one of the legends for this year’s Female Mundial in France, will arrive for the event ahead of three other officials due in the country hours later.

After Osaze’s arrival, the FIFA officials expected are Nicole Fisch (lead for women’s football project), Sarai Bareman (chief women’s football officer) and Vanessa Marques (lead for marketing project).

They will receive a special welcome at the office of Nigeria’s sports minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung on Thursday morning, after which the FIFA team, along with NFF officials, will move to Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja for the trophy display.

There will be a video documentary on the evolution of women football in Nigeria, an address by NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, and a presentation of FIFA’s perspective on women football, before individuals take turns for photographs with the glittering trophy.

NFF acting president, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi with other officials, as well as Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) chairperson, Aisha Falode and directors in the sports ministry are expected at the event.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are among the best 24 women national teams in the world that will battle to win the trophy this year, with the contest set to hold in nine cities across France from 7th June to 7th July.

Some Falcons’ players, who returned from a two-match tour of Spain on Tuesday, will join pupils from two schools in Abuja, stakeholders of the game and media representatives to be part of the historic event.

The trophy’s stop-over is coming 13 months after the men’s FIFA World Cup trophy also made a stop in Nigeria ahead of last year’s finals in Russia.
