Flying Eagles’ 2019 Players Will Be Forgotten – Lawal

Former Super Eagles winger, Garba ‘Chindo’ Lawal has expressed worries over the future of players from the current under-20 national team, Flying Eagles, as he fears they will not be remembered in the annals of Nigerian football, because they failed to win gold at this year’s Africa Games in Morocco.

As reactions continue trailing the Flying Eagles’ 2-0 defeat by Burkina Faso in Friday’s final, Lawal reckoned that Coach Paul Osahon Aigbogun’s lads will soon be forgotten by Nigerians, because nobody wants to talk about players that lose in finals.

Considering that the same set of players failed to shine at this year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and FIFA U-20 World Cup, Lawal warned that the penchant for unending success as desired by Nigerian soccer fans means the Flying Eagles’ squad of 2019 will end up lost to memory.

He added during Mega Sports on Star 101.5 FM, Lagos that Nigerian soccer fans do not reckon with losers or even second-placed teams, which could not become the spiral effect that will end up beclouding the future prospects of most players in Aigbogun’s team to Maroc 2019.

Lawal added: “Football is all about winning. If you don’t win, nobody is happy. We lost the final, and we could not win the gold medal, and nobody will remember this team again.

“The coach tried his best; he had some good players in the team. They scored some good goals, but they could not win gold. They got to the final, but they lost, and nobody likes silver in Nigeria.”
