Funke Oshonaike hospitalised following auto crash

Date:

The first woman to qualify for seven Olympic Games in table tennis, Funke Oshonaike was involved in an auto crash Saturday on her way to Hamburg, Germany, SportingLife.ng gathered.

The 46-year-old African Games medallist broke the news herself when she posted a short message asking for prayers to overcome the accident which was later attributed to brake failure.

“Pray for me. I just had a terrible accident! This is the saddest day of my life” she posted with a picture of the vehicle which had its bonnet mangled.

SportingLife confirmed from a source close to the 25-time national champion that she was driving to Hamburg to meet up with a very important appointment when she lost control of the car after experiencing brake failure.

It was understood that Oshoniake could not travel by air due to the bad weather in Germany and resorted to driving herself because of the importance of the appointment in Hamburg.

She was rescued from the car by the authorities in Germany and taken to the hospital for checks.

Just last year, the African tennis legend was officially inducted into the ITTF Club 7 where she joined Segun Toriola, three others as ping pong players that have competed at seven Olympics.

Oshonaike was presented with a plaque to officially mark her induction into the exclusive club, becoming the first woman to attain such an honour in the world of table tennis.
