Gareth Southgate resigns as England Manager after Euro 2024 final loss

Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation as manager of the England national football team, just two days following their defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Southgate, who took the helm in 2016 during a period of low morale for English football, leaves behind a legacy of significant achievement.

Under his leadership, England reached three semi-finals and two finals in the last four major tournaments. This marks a stark improvement from the team’s historical record, which before Southgate’s tenure included only three semi-final appearances and one final—when England won the 1966 World Cup.

Reflecting on his tenure, the 53-year-old expressed immense pride in representing and managing his country. “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” Southgate stated.

In his official statement, Southgate emphasized the need for change and signaled the conclusion of his tenure with the Football Association (FA). “Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager,” he confirmed. Southgate joined the FA in 2011 with a commitment to elevate English football, a mission he pursued with dedication during his eight-year stint as the men’s team manager.

Acknowledging the support he received, Southgate praised his coaching staff and the players who wore the England jersey under his guidance. “Every one of them has been proud to wear the three lions on their shirts,” he remarked, highlighting the promising young talent within the squad.

Southgate also expressed gratitude to the fans and backroom staff who supported him throughout his tenure. “We have the best fans in the world, and their support has meant the world to me,” he acknowledged.

Looking ahead, Southgate expressed optimism for England’s future in international football. “I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories,” he concluded, thanking England for the opportunities and memories created during his tenure.

Southgate’s departure marks the end of an era for English football, with attention now turning to who will succeed him as the next manager of the national team.
