Gasperini hails Lookman as ‘extraordinary player’ after Atalanta’s big win

Ademola Lookman

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini has played down any tensions with Ademola Lookman, praising the Nigeria international for his impressive brace in Atalanta’s 5-0 thrashing of Empoli on Sunday.

The crucial victory brought Atalanta within three points of Serie A leaders Inter Milan, and Gasperini emphasized Lookman’s importance to the team. Despite some recent tension following a Champions League defeat to Club Brugge, Lookman continues to shine for Atalanta, winning Man of the Match honors and scoring his 17th goal of the season across all competitions.

The forward has now matched his goal tally from last season with 12 Serie A matches still to play.

“Lookman has always scored a lot of goals, at least since he joined Atalanta,” Gasperini remarked in his post-match press conference. “He has become an extraordinary player, especially when he puts himself at the service of the team. He said he feels a bond with the fans, and I really appreciate that.”

Although Lookman didn’t shake Gasperini’s hand after being substituted in the 76th minute, the coach downplayed the incident, insisting that they are all professionals.

“I don’t know what you mean by professionalism, but it’s the best way to move forward. Professionalism on my part? We’re all professionals. We had a good match and scored great goals,” he stated.

Lookman’s stellar form has made him one of Serie A’s most coveted players, likely to attract interest from top European clubs during the summer transfer window. However, his focus remains on helping Atalanta chase the Serie A title. With just three points separating them from Inter Milan, the club is well-positioned for a title challenge as the season nears its conclusion.

Lookman will be hoping to mirror the success of Victor Osimhen, who led Napoli to their first Serie A title since 1990.
