Giannis Battles Injury Ahead of FIBA World Cup

Nigerian-born basketball star, Giannis Adetokunbo (Antetokounmpo) is in a race against time to be fit enough to star for Greece at this year’s FIBA World Cup in China, as he sat out their final warm-up match against Venezuela on Tuesday.

The Milwaukee Bucks of America forward is expected to be Greece’s top player at the tournament in China, after an outstanding season in USA’s National Basketball Association (NBA) league, in which he emerged as the immediate past season’s MVP.

However, alarm bells are rolling through the Greek camp, as their main star was not available to face Venezuela, after complaining of irritation in his knee and opted not to take the risk with the World Cup beginning on Saturday, with the Europeans starting play the following day

Greece begin their World Cup campaign against Montenegro on Sunday, with further group games against Brazil and New Zealand following next week, while Nigeria battle Russia, Argentina and South Korea.

While ‘The Greek Freak’ is now in doubt to start this weekend, his older brother, Thanasis Antetokounmpo had also been battling a foot problem but he was included in the team.
